Sunset Boulevard for the win
1 February 2023 06:33 pmAdmittedly it was only an amateur in-forum contest with a grand total of five entries, but I've entered quite a few of these Writers Anonymous contests over the years and rarely if ever won. (The feedback is generally along the lines of 'didn't really meet the terms of the challenge prompt', which is fair enough, as I tend to end up using them instead as prompts to pull out my finger and actually write one of the pre-existing story ideas that has been kicking around in my brain for a year or so...)
But I did get another 2 guest-kudos, which by the nature of things presumably has to indicate fresh readers.
I still haven't even got round to making the trip to update the story on FFNet, at least partly because I keep telling myself I'm going to write those reviews for the other entrants in the Narrative Voices challenge... and not doing it. So I have no idea what the viewing stats are on the Sunset Boulevard story -- or even who the one person who apparently favourited it was, since the email alerts were broken at that point! I did get a lovely review from Mei Bruges, though (to which I still haven't replied either...)
[Edit: about 40 hits on FFnet, plus another unexpected review. I forgot to check on the favourite, though!]
High City on a Hill (ch9)
17 September 2022 07:59 pmI sat down to try to write my long-overdue reviews on my fellow-competitors' stories for the Writers Anonymous challenge, having eventually succeeded in downloading them via the library for offline reading despite the worst that FFnet could do, but completely failed to do so -- however I have, instead, finally managed to finish typing up and checking the next chapter of Hertha back against the manuscript. And I have also -- as of September 2nd -- managed to complete the rewrite on Chapter 24 of Arctic Raoul (after three months of delay) and even got as far as typing up the first scene of Ch25, although I still have another two scenes comprising a total of 3,500 words or so to be typed. (Those chapters are definitely getting longer and longer, and it massively inflates the editing time because the prospect becomes so daunting...)

Chapter 9 — “Well-Beloved Wife”
As I’d anticipated, Raoul returned to follow me out almost before the carriage had been brought round. He looked tired and rather dispirited despite the splendour of his costume, and was disinclined to talk even once we were seated and driving back.
Madame Giry had been less than helpful, I gathered. She’d disclosed what she’d heard or guessed about the Ghost’s origins — a carnival freak and deformed genius who’d gone missing years before, evidently quitting the sideshow life to take up existence outside the law — but she’d said nothing of how she came to be delivering his notes, or of where he could be found, and Raoul was convinced she had to know more than she was telling.
“You know, carnival origins could explain quite a lot.” Despite myself, I found my interest caught. “Not least the use of mesmerism. And the oddly theatrical flair — this isn’t just lunacy, it’s an insane performance.”

I still haven't done a full check-back against the manuscript (and it's too late for that now), since I didn't have time for anything more this afternoon than a straight read-through of what I'd typed up the previous night. I only spotted one typo -- a full stop instead of a comma -- but inevitably then I noticed a couple more at the point where I was actually reading it back after posting on FFnet :-p
The story as a whole hasn't really come out as well as I'd hoped when I originally had the idea, I'm afraid. ( Problems )
I did mean to download the other entries for offline reading/reviewing, but I forgot to try -- so I have no idea at all of how the other entrants tackled the challenge, or even if I interpreted it correctly. (Also, apparently FFnet is currently having a review bug again...)
Emergency submission
31 August 2022 02:51 amThis is my attempted entry for the Writers Anonymous Narrative Voice Challenge, which has to be submitted by August 31st (and on FFnet, which means I can't do it after the library closes at 6.30pm).
That means I have to write and type the final section -- Norma's voice -- and then proofread the whole thing tomorrow morning for same-day publication; inevitably there are going to be rough edges, and probably typos remaining.
I think I have at least managed to establish the requisite three different voices for the three characters quite well, and Norma, like Max, is so distinctive that she should be *reasonably* easy to handle. And her section is, by intention, supposed to be short!
(Ouch -- I still also have to come up with a title and summary for the thing before I can submit it...)( Read more... )

List of Completed Fics
At this point it's starting to get repetitive to say, yet again, that 'thanks to continuing work I haven't completed much this year' -- despite the fact that I *have* been writing pretty much constantly, six days a week at least, I have published very little. The only difference is that it isn't currently 'the Swedish story' holding matters up, though I have managed a certain amount of editing work on that.( Read more... )

To quote from last year, "Thanks to continuing work on the Swedish story, I haven't completed much this year, and what I have done has been [almost] entirely one-shots"! An introduction I hope not to have to repeat for yet another year, or at least not for the same reason.( Read more... )
