I have finally reached 'that' scene (struggling all the way), which means I should now be reasonably(?) close to the end. Although it does ironically mean that de Brencourt probably spends much *less* time with Valentine than he does with Gaston -- possibly just as well, in terms of the plausibility of how long her husband is likely to leave them alone together before coming in to rejoin the conversation :-O
I have also typed up four and a half thousand words from the beginning in five-hundred-word chunks, courtesy of 'work-in-progress Wednesdays' when you are allowed to post an extract from your current work on my Facebook writers' group, and received so far as I recall absolutely zero reaction of any kind to any of them -- but it does mean that I have a reasonable fair copy of most of the first scene, and that length-wise the first scene is clearly a chapter in its own right, if not two. But the only obvious split falls even further on than the point I have reached, which would make the second chapter less than two thousand words to the first chapter's four and a half...
The second untyped chapter is circa 55 sides of 150/200 words apiece, which would make it another ten thousand words -- my normal chapter-length sensor has evidently gone awry for this one, perhaps due to the extreme slowness of progress. (I have written seven sides since the last date I can pinpoint, nine days ago, which mainly goes to prove the old adage that the man who writes a hundred laborious words a day will eventually achieve more than the one who waits for sufficient motivation to write his target two thousand in one inspired flush :-p) But this story really has been a struggle almost throughout, and the term 'self-indulgent' keeps going throgh my mind in terms of what I am doing with the material -- inasmuch as one can term anything self-indulgent that feels like such thankless work to attain.
