The nylon stocking that I had placed over the top of the flower spike of my gone-to-seed beetroot plant has been constantly drooping to the ground and soaking up any rain going, so I could not imagine that even if any seed had managed to ripen, that it would be fit to harvest. I stripped it off this morning and found a lot of very decayed looking bits (plus snails), plus a seedling that had evidently started to germinate through the nylon and been ripped in half.

I did find one thing that was presumably a seed and was putting out a reddish root, so I carefully buried it in a fresh (labelled) pot along with the rest of the debris to see if anything would come up for future salad use! I don't know if the similar stocking on the basil flower spike has harvested anything; at least that one has remained off the ground....

Sadly my second attempt at planting out a spring onion stub failed after initially starting to sprout nicely -- I think it drowned when the tray the pot was sitting in (due to earlier drought conditions) filled with rainwater. Oddly enough the established spring onions in the same pot were fine, but the green shoot on that one withered and the white part then rotted.

I discovered only when the top of the pot was actually swimming in water that I had never pierced the base of the second pink Swan River daisy plant for drainage! Which may explain why that one has rather unsatisfactory and deformed flowers compared to its happily-flowering compatriot. It does not, however, explain the previous mortality.

The two tomato stumps that put out fresh flowers a few weeks ago have set one fruit each, currently about thumbnail size. They probably won't get much bigger than that :-p

The Keapr site that I have been using as a non-JavaScript-reliant image host now seems to have died (the preview images in many of my posts still seem to be around, but clicking on them for the full version or trying to bring up http://keapr.com/ results in a site error). I suspect it hadn't been maintained or used in a long time, since the top few sample user images displayed were all from mine in the last few years...
