(I don't know what on earth I'm going to do about the Day 7 prompt for 'Secretary' either. Valentine has a sécretaire, but sadly that's not the same thing -- at least not according to the OED.)

Twilight, in May, proved to come rather later than Roland had anticipated. He was obliged to contain himself with quite heroic patience until it was safe to begin his ascent of the long white wall into the park at Mirabel, and it was the purest of bad luck that a soldier of the National Guard should happen to pass along the road a minute or two after.
He tumbled hastily over the top and down into a thicket, listening rather anxiously for sounds of pursuit from the guardpost at the château gates. Well, at any rate he had got in...
