I tried the experiment of using an cardboard egg-box as a seed tray, as recommended with the idea that you can simply cut up and plant out the individual cells in their damp cardboard once the seed has germinated, without needing to disturb the seedlings' roots.
Of course the people who recommend this are taking it for granted that you will be planting the same type of seed in all six cells — I tried to be clever and planted six different kinds (and didn't label them...) And of course they all germinate at different times, which means that the first batch are busy getting leggy while the slowest are still at the 'needs dark and warmth' stage :-p But I can't very well cut out a single cell from the cardboard, as I think the remainder will fall apart (the divisions between the various sections are not all that distinct).
Luckily germination is quite quick at this time of year. Currently visible: salad rocket (first of all), followed by poached-egg plant (?probably) and then marigolds. Something has germinated in the end compartment where I planted either yellow or red poppy seed, but I don't think it's a poppy. Signs of germination from a large number of very small things in the third compartment, which may be poppy seed, although I didn't think I'd sown it in there! And I know I planted the shoo-fly plant seeds somewhere, and it looks as if it may be the other end compartment, where something larger is raising its head.
