Winter by the Fireside
11 November 2007 03:38 pmI laid and lit the first fire of the winter this evening — not that it was especially cold, or anything, but because I was tired and lonely and felt like some company. I do like the little murmuring noises that a fire makes as it burns alongside you. Also, I didn't feel like going anywhere near a computer, and sitting in front of the fire with a good book (or, in my case, a slender romance in German upon which I am testing my seriously inadequate vocabulary) is an excellent substitute for doing any actual 'work'!
I was a bit worried that there might be a bird's-nest in the chimney or something, but it lit perfectly despite months of disuse and drew at once: not a hint of smoke coming out into the room. A testament to the long-dead designer who constructed our chimney-breasts.... I'm afraid I cheat and use fire-lighters; I do technically know how to light a fire using crumpled paper, slivers of wood, and small coal (and have in the past relit kitchen ranges that have gone out by the use of this method), but it does make life so much easier simply to pile stuff up on top of a white paraffin fire-lighter.
Now I'm going to go back and sit beside it!
