I have thinned out the poached-egg plants and removed them from the mini-greenhouse, since they have now germinated en masse. Of the eight nasturtiums two have now shown signs of germination. Some poppies have germinated in the yellow poppy pot, but almost certainly not yellow ones -- on the other hand, I have something that looks very much like the original Cumbrian poppy re-emerging yet again in the miniature rose pot...!

I need to remember to sow Swan River daisies and mesembryanthemums. And maybe some flax.

I have one vigorous towel-tomato, and one of the others that appeared to be attempting to germinate and then appeared to have damped off before ever raising its head has now unexpectedly risen above soil level. And there is also another one that came up with damaged seed-leaves but may grow stronger. Not the greatest germination record out of however many seeds were on that square of towelling... however, it was only a quarter of them. I may need to plant out another square, and should probably start off the Roma as well, since I took the trouble to save the seed from last year.

The chillies appear to be alive but are still at the stage of poking out a little curl of root (at least those ones which are inadvertently visible) rather than of actually coming up. It is probably still too cold for them even indoors, although it did get quite a bit warmer today.

I am still struggling mightily with getting an ending on my "Yellow Poppy" story, while the 'fandom-blind' intro attempt really isn't working either :-(
I sort-of navigated out of my morass of angst and back to the originally intended ending (that being "so if you mean to regard Valentine as your sister then that makes you my uncle") via Gaston's ring which Roland is still wearing, and that I had invoked earlier as part of my attempts at setting up the backstory -- it is obviously going to be a bit of a shock for de Brencourt to recognise his former leader's memorable signet on the young man's hand!

The basic problem is/was, I think, that I *had* overshot that ending and therefore had no idea where the scene was meant to be going. I still need to work out exactly where and how I am going to stop, but I don't think I can trail away on the current sentence (At any rate it was a little like being back in Brittany...) Besides, before we end I really need to steer the focus back to Gaston, even if not to his death (it probably wants to be a reasonably optimistic ending, both for canon-consistency and to make that 'parting shot' plausible) and away from de Brencourt, who really is *not* Roland's primary concern at this moment :-p

I was planning to use the title "The Remorse of Others", since it is a line that de Brencourt quotes from canon, It is dangerous to play with the remorse of others -- a warning directly aimed at him but which he deliberately scorns. (Although, to be fair, this is in large part because he is at that point in such a state of mind that he cares nothing at all for any potential consequences to himself and more or less expects the two of them to go down in flames together in any case; he is completely consumed with hate for Gaston.) And of course it comes back to bite him later: You might conceivably know that torment yourself one day. But again, I'm not sure how well that title now fits with the state of the story as it stands :-(
