All right, I've now typed eight more chapters of Arctic Raoul (only one of those tonight!) and proofread one. Chapter titles are provisionally as follows:
Chapter 13 | On Open Water | 4241 words |
Chapter 14 | Derelict | 3025 |
Chapter 15 | Hard Labour | 2628 |
Chapter 16 | Hope from Afar | 2854 |
Chapter 17 | Crisis Point | 3666 |
Chapter 18 | Ice and Water | 2553 |
Chapter 19 | Along the Floes | 2572 |
Chapter 20 | Disaster and Surprise | 4354 |
Most of them quite short. (Previous chapter lengths.)
And here, for the record, is the anecdote about Raoul and Madame Valerius' underwear that was excised from the rewrite of Chapter 1 ;-p
He had not even blenched at the task of obtaining new small-clothes for Madame Valerius in Lübeck, armed as he was with only a few words of the language; and the old lady, delivered safely into the hands of a capable middle-aged female with a suitable supply of voluminous cotton garments for her to point at, had returned for a happy half-hour or so almost to her former self. Christine had been so grateful to Raoul that she could have kissed him.But she had not. She could not forget that terrible cry on the night when their lips had met for the first and only time, or the ring that had slipped from her finger as if by magic in the moment of that embrace. And even back in Lübeck she had known that this moment of parting would come for them both.
