DrabbleWriMo 5: Meeting

The next few prompts are going to cause problems -- not least because the peace treaty (Day 10 prompt) that actually does feature in the novel's plot doesn't occur until about two-thirds of the way through... *after* the petal[Day 15] of the yellow poppy. As it is I'm going to have to do an almighty jump over a lot of events at Mirabel, if I go for the obvious interpretation of 'vein'[Day 6] :-(

He had been sounding the hearth for secret passages in the great hall at Mirabel when he saw her.

At first, standing so still and pale with her lamp, he had taken her for a ghost; her own ghost, risen to walk again in the deserted, desecrated rooms where the Duchesse de Trélan had once held court.

But her voice, low, hesitant, was that of a living woman. "Is it— is it Monsieur de Brencourt?"

For a moment he could not move, his heart beating with a thunder that must surely deafen them both. Hope dawned in sudden, incredulous belief.
