You know summer is coming on when you find yourself hanging out washing at 4.30pm with the hopes that it might actually dry...
I bought a smoked mackerel for £5 at the market this morning -- the first real fish I've had in a long time, although I still have one tin of tuna left -- and made magic mackerel again. I think it was rather larger than the supermarket fillets (I got three helpings this time, and the proportion of mackerel to the other ingredients still seemed more generous than usual), but in any case the smell of fish is everywhere. I had to wash my shopping-bag, and did wash the plastic bag I'd used to enclose the fish, but I think that will have to be demoted to bike-saddle-covering purposes (it originally came from the greengrocer's stall). My hands still smell of fish despite having been washed twice, and rinsed several times during the actual process of dismembering the mackerel. The kitchen smells of fish. Fortunately the recycling goes on Monday night and will take away the fishy paper the mackerel was wrapped in, plus the skin, head, tail and bones.
Now I remember why I don't normally buy fish... (Well, apart from the fact that it goes off quickly, is hard to eke out into multiple meals, is expensive, and above all that I don't actively like it all that much!)
