I have been looking through ancestral photo albums... it's salutary to remind oneself that not everybody in the 1950s or 1930s looked as glamorous as the surviving magazine or movie star images! Perhaps my ancestors were a particularly slapdash lot, but they managed to look pretty badly dressed in just about any style until you get back to the Victorian era when there is some quite nice lace and top hats going on...
