igenlodeApparently fanfiction.net's 'planned network migration' has involved putting in some kind of very complex DDoS protection which means that neither of my browsers can so much as *display* any page on their site, let alone allow me to log into my own account. (I no longer have access to any of my past fiction; how fortunate that I still have all the original files on my computer!)
I was worried about losing my log-in, which since the last security upgrade I have only been able to access via my linked Facebook account, but I didn't actually think they'd contrive to disable basic read-only access. But -- like Pinterest and now Twitter -- they have. There was a brief window this afternoon where I was able to access the site with JavaScript disabled simply by waiting for the page to auto-refresh after a thirty-second delay, but as I suspected this was evidently an unintended security loophole which has now been patched.
In the short term, this may well improve my productivity; in the long term, I'm unlikely to bother writing any more fan-fiction if I have to jump through yet more hoops in order to publish it or even to see any reviews. It's a pity I received a very nice review just this morning that I never had the chance to reply to (and can now only read the first 260 words of, since the alert email truncates at that point). AO3 isn't really an alternative, since I can read passively but couldn't jump through the necessary browser hoops to create an account there. (I only had access to FFnet because I had a pre-existing 'grandfather' account; I'm sure in recent years I wouldn't have been able to set up a new one.)
Experiment shows that I can view FFnet via a mobile phone, and can presumably upload the remaining chapters of "An Outsider and a Foreigner" by that method and acknowledge my unanswered review. But I'm obviously going to be spending a lot less time on the site from now on.
(It never occurred to me that I wouldn't even be able to view the listing of my own stories and hence not be able to cite the URLs for them...)
Edit: and now a couple of hours later the auto-refresh trick happens to be working again. Who knows for how long?

Date: 2020-12-20 12:37 am (UTC)I managed to retrieve it after another blink of viable access (what I can't work out is what series of actions triggers the redirection to the correct page, and which simply cycles round refreshing the same security error ad infinitum -- it may well be timing-based and/or random).
And I even managed to slip in a quick PM reply (although by the time I'd pressed Send and gone to check the outbox, the site had blanked again, and I had to wait an hour or so before I could be certain whether it had actually gone or not!)
'I want to read more chapters despite the fact that I'm not involved in this fandom simply because your writing is so good' is of course the sort of reaction that every novice fanfiction writer *dreams* of (and assumes will happen if one can just spam those pesky readers into clicking on the link to the story, only to realise painfully slowly that it just doesn't work that way!)
And I think it was genuine, because it was preceded by a follow alert -- rather than a 'favourite author, favourite story, follow author, follow story' clean sweep, which doesnt mean a thing.
