igenlodeRight, I've finally incorporated the last reusable element from my original version of Plot Point Fifteen (having decided I wasn't going to use it -- but having Raoul deal with the fire turned out to fit rather conveniently with my idea of writing Christine's conversation with Erik as sound effects only; the narrator has his back turned at the time!) The difference is that this now happens after Erik's dialogue rather than before, and in fact all the scheduled events concerning Erik happen rather earlier, thus pretty much solving the original problem.
(Sigh -- it's only taken me a month and a half. So much for being finished by January... although that in itself was a misremembering of what I'd actually written in the first place, back at the end of September, which was a mildly optimistic hope that I would be finished within the next twelve months, rather than by the end of the year, even if the latter did briefly look like a possibility.) I celebrated by taking up my scissors and ceremonially cutting out the eight obsolete pages from the manuscript -- and getting slightly carried away and accidentally throwing away my printed-out plot summary for the chapter at the same time, which I had to retrieve as I'm only halfway through it :-D
The great thing is that the chapter now feels workable, and that the dialogue etc. is coming of its own accord again. Everything is back on the right track... even if, as ever, it isn't quite the one originally expected!
(The irony is that it was Raoul's line about 'why don't we just shoot him now?' that made me realise the previous version was headed in completely the wrong direction ever to reach that point; well, as it turns out, the current version of Raoul is going to end up saying it because he can't face the thought of any more squeamish medical details rather than because he wants Erik punished for what he has done. The conflict is always between that line and the fact that Raoul does have the opportunity to shoot him earlier and doesn't... and that he doesn't like the thought of waiting around for Erik to put an end to himself using the pistol either.)
