I got a rather puzzled comment from someone whose first language is not English, asking why Hans doesn't resent Anna 'worrying for his soul' -- it is self-evident in context, isn't it, that the sally "Poor Hans, does it hurt very much? The conscience?" coupled with the blaze-up of spirit is not an expression of sympathy on Anna's part but a sarcastic rejoinder?

Yeah, I see that there's nothing containing this question among the reviews. Maybe this reader thought that someone as naive as Anna is incapable of sarcasm?
