Frozen draft finished

Right, the first draft of my "Frozen" story is finished, with the provisional title "The Opportunist" -- unless I can think of a better one -- and the summary "Hans could resist everything except temptation". I can't very well tag it as a Hans/Anna 'pairing', though to be honest it's nearer to that than anything else, in a twisted way...

I need to go back and do some edits for consistency; I think I got a bit mixed up between trying to maintain the coldly dismissive tone of the original and simplifying it to Hans basically telling the truth. This version of Hans is not really telling the truth to anyone, least of all himself, I think.

I'm slightly disturbed to discover via DeviantArt that there is apparently a flourishing school of fans busy pairing Hans off with Elsa, presumably in the same enterprising spirit of mopping up the spares as those who assume that Raoul is destined to couple up to Meg once the Phantom has appropriated his former fianceé ;-p

I haven't read any Frozen fanfiction but I'm not sure if shipping Elsa/Hans is done only to "pair the spares". They could have be a fascinating "intentionally unhealthy" dark pairing, and to think about it, if fans want to pair Hans with anyone, Elsa's personality can be seen as more suitable for him than Anna's.

I can see an argument for pairing Elsa off with Kristoff on the grounds that they're both really interested in ice (indeed, Kristoff is spellbound by the awesomeness of what Elsa can do with ice), and I suppose you could argue that Hans's repeated actions in defence of Elsa when he supposedly can't wait to bump her off indicate that he has some kind of suppressed attraction to her... but it really doesn't come across that way in the film.

(I haven't read the Elsa/Hans fanfic either; I just noticed its existence...)

There's also a popular headcanon that Elsa is a lesbian, which would make those pairings doubly unlikely. ;)

Because all 'frigid' women are lesbians, I suppose...

Elsa shows no signs of attraction to any women during the (objectively short) action of the film. She shows no signs of romantic interest in anyone at all, which is hardly surprising given what she is having to deal with at the time -- it's Anna whom we are told is behaving inappropriately by spending her one day plunging into romance ;-p

No, it's more about Elsa's ice powers being interpreted as a metaphor for homosexuality (girl is forced to conceal and taught to fear an essential part of her identity, which makes her miserable; it's only when she learns to love and accept that part of herself as an adult that she finds inner peace) and "Let It Go" being seen as a coming-out anthem.

Well, it is a Disney movie, and one could just as easily headcanon her as asexual. :P

I'd head-canon her as justifiably traumatised, myself!

(Homosexuality doesn't -- normally -- kill anyone who comes near you, and Elsa's fear is based on very real experience; she doesn't want to hurt other people every time she forgets herself or gets upset. So you could equally well position it as a coming of age story in which she reaches adulthood when she gains conscious control over her powers rather than being at the mercy of every passing emotion, like a toddler :p)

It's entirely understandable that Elsa is afraid of intimacy with anyone, whether on a romantic level or not. Once she has control of her powers and can use them for good, then I think that particular barrier will probably fade away -- we've already seen her allowing herself to get closer to Anna, which is a 'safe' pre-existing relationship.

Most Helsa fic seems to stem from the fire!Hans theory (basically that Hans wears gloves all the time because he has fire powers, which is one of the reasons why he is ostracized by his brothers). I don't think it has any chances of actually happening, but it's still fun to read about (not to mention that potential OOCness put aside, most of those fics make up for better stories than the actual film XD).

(Also, I have a feeling you writing Frozen fic is all my fault.)

Yes, I did notice that Hans makes a point of taking his gloves off in order to douse the fire (possibly in order to avoid getting soot on that nice white cloth? ;-p) after keeping them on at all other times. Which seemed an oddly pointed action to depict -- otherwise, one would assume that, like Mickey Mouse, his hands just have gloves on as part of his costume :-P) -- but doesn't appear to lead to any subsequent revelations in the context of the film. Given that the plot isn't exactly wonderful at trailing the revelations it does attempt to make, I suppose I could credit that this is part of an planned plot strand that got cut out at the last minute :-D

It's interesting to reread my original reactions after having carefully re-watched the film for purposes of Hans-analysis: it seems to me that my outraged recollections were amazingly accurate. Although my outline of a putative fan-fic seems a better character study than what eventually came out :-(

On the other hand, I doubt I should have agreed to watch the film if it hadn't been for Let It Go. (It's rather scary that you managed 145,000 words on that; I've been working on Arctic Raoul for over a year and I haven't generated anything like that amount of work...)

I wrote that fic where I had A LOT of free time on my plate - which is hardly the case nowadays, since I'm in the middle of my B.A. and I'm asking myself right now whether I should go for the Master's degree or not :P As proof of this, there's that fic I started in October and that I really want to go back to, but I still haven't found the time for it XD (I keep getting people telling me to do NaNoWriMo, but November is the busiest time of the year for me)

There is an original fiction I'm thinking of, but I'm preparing a huge outline + a whole lot of research before writing down anything.
