Thanks -- I realised too late that I'd set myself up a real challenge writing a story featuring a variety of heavy accents in which none of them is intended to be the least comic. (Choosing an American protagonist in a world where the chief audience for the story is going to be a whole load of Americans was particularly rash, but I hadn't expected to have to deal with actual Frenchmen feeling potentially caricatured as well...)
"Mr Rowl" -- as well as being a homage to D.K.Broster -- is a fandom in-joke, since the average teenage American apparently struggles horribly with all and any of "Roual", "Viscompte" and "Changy". At least to judge by the evidence of fan-fiction!
