I never cease to marvel at the operations of the Bedstead Men.

We have a strange tacit agreement locally. Instead of being taken away by the Council as a 'large waste' collection, any unwanted scrap metal -- old fire-guards, pram frames, lengths of angle iron -- is left outside the front gates. And within an astonishingly short time, it disappears.

I'm pretty sure they must be taking it for resale on the scrap market. But no-one ever set up this arrangement. There's a fair amount of trust involved -- they could just as easily take the wrought-iron gates themselves. And how on earth do they find out that the stuff is there? Last night I put a few old saucepans, lightweight pans with damaged handles, scarcely worth anyone's time for the metal value, outside on the offchance. When I left at lunchtime they were still there. When I got back after dark, they had gone!

Anyone would think they had a van cruising every street daily... but no-one has ever seen them at it.

Watch the wall, my darling, while the Bedstead Men go by!
