Of fruit and veg
2 July 2022 04:01 pmMy pak choi are all bolting at only a month old -- presumably because it is late in the season or else because they are/have been under heat stress. The flower buds are rather reminiscent of purple flowering broccoli... but the plants are obviously not going to 'heart up' to any degree, so I've been picking the largest leaves and using them as salad.
Apparently it's normal for them to be ready to harvest after only a month: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2008/apr/05/vegetables.growingyourown6
Clearly I need to replant.
Meanwhile, the second sowing of calendulas are doing exactly the same thing -- forming flower-buds -- only instead of being accused of 'bolting', they are 'coming into bloom'!
Good timing, as the previous pair of plants now seem to have finished flowering and are yielding copious quantities of seed. The cornflowers are also finishing flowering, but most of the fluffy dead flower-heads don't seem to contain any actual seed under the fluff, despite the large number of flowers and the insects that visited them. I seem to remember having a similar experience last year, but did finally find one flower-head that actually had seed attached. (And having saved it from last year, at least I know what I'm looking for!)
