It turns out that Valentine's married surname does come into the story after all ;-)
She married the (presumably elderly) Comte de Saint-Mathurin, who died within a few years, and has been a somewhat unworldly widow ever since.
(In fact Google tells me that there is a real village of Saint-Mathurin in the Vendée, and that, stranger still, the chapel of Saint-Mathurin in Paris was at one time the headquarters of the University of Paris, but that's what you get with saints, even when you pick highly obscure ones :-p Presumably the fictional Comte's ancestral domaine was in the Vendée...)
