The first one was from a Pokemon fan-fic that I happened to be looking at on the author's request in order to check for something else, and the second one was an off-the-cuff writing forum example given by someone who wanted to know where he could find an online selection of 'strong' verbs -- such as 'trotted' -- to replace 'weak' usages such as 'walked restlessly'. (Which is why 'walked restlessly' doesn't quite fit seamlessly in my example; I was trying specifically to demonstrate that there were occasions when it was much better to use this expression than one that draws more attention to itself.)
And in both cases I'm fairly certain that I spent far more time over the rewrite than the original writer did in coming up with his version, so it's not really a fair comparison -- although the evident thesaurus-usage in the first one may have taken up a considerable amount of time...
