I think they are responsive to light levels -- you can keep houseplants as warm as you like during the winter, but without adequate daylight it's hard to fool them into thinking it's summer indoors -- but since I normally keep my window open all year round the temperature on my windowsill has been pretty much the same as the temperature in the grass under the trees outside in any case :-)
