Ironically enough the heroine is actually wearing a 'chemise' herself a couple of paragraphs earlier when she gets out of bed to open the window to her bedraggled visitor: "Pulling her silk dressing gown over her cotton chemise, she crossed the room and opened the shutter. Beyond the glass, the deluge continued."
It's not a big point and it *is*, of course, the authentic French terminology for a man's garment (with a chemise de nuit being a nightshirt). The choice of wording just made me do an inappropriate double-take in the middle of what the author clearly intended to be a suggestive passage...
