The drought was death to pretty much anything in a pot sans watering multiple times a day (which is what I've been doing...), but the 'trough' is one of the largest and deepest pots, so I'd have thought things would do better in there from that point of view. Of course it is in the forefront and shading all the smaller stuff behind it, but I don't *think* the problem was with the soil overheating. It seemed to be a succession of caterpillars and snails.
(And even the surviving fresh shoots on the thyme seem to be dying back now; I've no idea what is wrong with that, and of course a herb that is barely clinging to life and can't be harvested is pointless for culinary purposes...)
