In fact, analysing this on the most crudely cod-psychological level, I think the reason why I don't identify with the Phantom is simple: my demons are demons of guilt, not victimhood and persecution.
"All for you, and all for nothing" resonates with me on a level that "The world showed no compassion to me!" doesn't. The husband who fears he has failed his wife means more to me than the seducer who claims that he alone can make her 'whole'.
