But it's plausible enough that he would say 'my father' in a context where the two brothers aren't being discussed as a pair; the relevant element of the sentence is that the character is the narrator's father, rather than that he is or is not Raoul's father....
I'm currently trying to write that scene in Chapter 2 (which is, so far, entirely flashback; I have the usual problem of needing to make sure I re-establish the narrator in the present day before hitting the end of the chapter!) and having some trouble getting to that stage. The stage of Hertha's father having the 'good sense' to marry her off to someone she knows and likes, rather than to the most socially advantageous candidate, I mean... although I suspect that Raoul is a pretty good catch from that perspective ;-p
