I should perhaps make it more clear that I was referring to the "Barbary Coast" fanfic above rather than to the events of the original film -- although my point was that the character's own flaws will continue to drive him to act in this or a similar fashion.
Chances of getting hold of a second-ranking film of the 1930s from any public institution are pretty slim I'm afraid. This is not great cinema, and part of the reason why is that the villains -- Edward G. Robinson and Brian Donlevy -- make more impression than the supposedly virtuous characters. It's an oddball production, and not really a success; but it caught my imagination.
(NB: Not to be confused with "Flame of the Barbary Coast", which is a John Wayne vehicle!)
