All Shall Be Well
I have, provisionally at least, *finished* my song translation... and have no intention of doing any more for the foreseeable future; Mordaunt's songs and the reggae about money do not call to me (although studying the latter to find out what it actually says, as opposed to attempting to render it into a verse translation, might be educational!)
I'm currently quite pleased with the way it came out, which I think gets across the flavour and shape of the original lyrics while providing a pretty close translation -- *and* fitting back into the tune provided ;-)
Original lyrics: https://lyricsonline.ru/36293-igor-nadzhiev-moy-angel.html
Literal translation:
It may be strange and ridiculous,
But all night long for many years
I dream of a shining heaven
Where my angel, my guardian lives.
Of the complicated earthly carousel
He takes care, and himself no longer remembers
How many, in order to save me,
Miracles he had accomplished from time to time
Chorus:
The sworn and ancient enemy again swears
To grind me into powder
But the angel does not doze, and everything will pass over,
And it will all end well --
And it will all end well.
It may seem that life is about to be broken off
When misfortune trumpets its black horn
And horses neigh, and blood flows in rivers,
And the earth goes out afresh from underfoot.
Yet the Earth too has its guardian
And between the stars there stretch out towards him
Invisible threads of salvation
In order that everything should not end in a moment...
CHORUS
Verse translation:
Perhaps it may be strange and foolish of me,
But all night long for years I've dreamt alone
About a shining heaven up above me
In which my guardian angel makes his home.
Across the weary whirling world enduring
He watches, and himself cannot recall
What miracles on my behalf procuring
The angel has accomplished, all in all.Our intricate revolving world lies under
His care, and he himself cannot recall
What miracles already he has conjured
On my behalf to save me, all in all.
Chorus:
My long sworn opponent again vows to try me
And grind me to dust, down to dust where I fell.
My angel still watches -- this too shall pass by me
And all in the end shall be well,
All manner of thing shall be well.
Though life may seem upon the point of ending
When trouble trumpets forth its sombre note,
With neighing steeds, and blood in streams descending,
And ground that slips away from underfoot,
The Earth too has its own divine protector,
Between the stars towards him there extend
The threads that guard and save us undetected
Lest in a single moment all should end...
Chorus:
My long sworn opponent again vows to try me
And grind me to dust, down to dust where I fell.
My angel still watches -- this too shall pass by me
And all in the end shall be well,
And all in the end shall be well,
All manner of thing shall be well!
