Fanfic Year in Review 2020

List of Completed Fics

Apparently I've only completed one story this year -- and not entirely due to "continuing work on the Swedish story" for once! (It did take me about four months to write this one, and I have written 28 pages, a considerable quantity of which was subsequently discarded, on "An Outsider and a Foreigner". But I don't have very much finished work to show. Perhaps I should have taken the Sunset Boulevard idea further.)

The Writing on the Wall (7022 words
Fandom: Phantom of the Opera (Leroux)
Characters: Raoul, Erik, Christine
Summary: Chained and alone in the cells of the Communards, Raoul reaches into the past for a final act of defiance.

Total word count

7,000 words... plus 5,000 or so for the end of the Swedish story and 10,000 or so on Hertha.

Ship/character breakdown

Can I even do any of these headings meaningfully? Raoul/Christine, one or two or three depending on how you look at it.

I really can't do any specifics about best/worst summary etc.

General questions

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

I expected to finish the Swedish story, and I did. Unfortunately I failed to get very far in editing/publishing it, despite having a golden opportunity (and initially feeling very positive) in the whole lockdown business.

Having finished that, I intended to take a rest, and did. All the same, I would probably have assumed that I would have written more -- I actually believed that I had two or three stories to list, and was actively surprised to discover that the Madame Valerius drabble-fic was already in my previous year's summary, and that I hadn't completed anything else.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

Well, I probably wouldn't have predicted that I would try writing an Raoul/OC story of any variety...

What's your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

I was going to say "Coming back", but that was last year! I'm not terribly happy about any of them.

Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?

I've ended up writing a somewhat different Raoul for "An Outsider and a Foreigner", where Hertha perceives him as pretty much a feckless boy, though that view needs to change for plot consistency...

Most overdue story?

The usual candidate.

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

At least to finish typing Arctic Raoul. To manage to finish Hertha's story. Beyond that I'm starting to wonder if I shall be writing any fan-fic or indeed anything at all.
