I decided to add a chillies tag retrospectively to my blog (possibly I should do tomatoes, as well?), as I seem to write about them so often -- however it is likely to be of fairly questionable utility since just about *every* entry already tagged with plant-pots appeared to refer to chillies! I hadn't realised I'd been writing about them quite that much...

After working my way through the entire 200-odd list of posts tagged as being about growing plants, I ended up with 79 (at the time of writing) references to chillies amongst them. The tag probably *should* be a sub-tag of 'plant-pots', since they never occur independently, but it's rather a lot to type... and since there are very few posts that refer to chillies *without* also referring to other plants, most of those posts would end up with duplicate 'plant-pots' tags on them anyway.

comments

Following on from yesterday's labours, I think I have now also completed the task of going through and adding the tags film-review and british-film to all the entries between July 2014 and December 2007.

NB one weird Dreamwidth feature I discovered -- far too late to be of any use! -- was that posts which are accessed by clicking on their titles have a "previous entry"/"next entry" link at the bottom only, which means an awful lot of scrolling when scanning through years' worth of posts in consecutive order.
Posts which were originally accessed by clicking on a date from the archive view get a URL in the form of a date rather than a link to the specific post, and when viewed in that format they acquire a convenient "previous day"/"next day" link at the top of the post!

( Dreamwidth post IDs )

comments

I suspect I'm probably the only person who, when deciding that a new blog tag is needed, goes back through hundreds of past entries (I'm currently on ?skip=380) in order to locate all the places where it ought retrospectively to have applied :-p

It never did make much sense that I had a tag for cold but not one for heat -- it was just a matter of historical accident, dating back I think to importing my old blog from MySpace. Which I never did finish doing...

[Edit: I managed to navigate all the way to ?skip=770 (2016) using the "Previous 20" links, but beyond that the site only lets you view one post at a time and go to 'Previous Day', and since this is even slower than skimming the summary versions at 20 per page I've given up on re-tagging at around August 2015.]

comments

For my future reference: Tag Wrangling, take 2!

When viewing a journal's tag pages, you can change the URL to show you entries tagged with multiple tags. For instance, to view any entry in your journal tagged with either "kittens" or "puppies", https://igenlode.dreamwidth.org/tag/kittens,puppies?mode=or would be used. To view all entries in your journal tagged with both "kittens" and "puppies", https://igenlode.dreamwidth.org/tag/kittens,puppies?mode=and would be used.

(From https://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=23 )

This seems also as good a random place as any to mention a surprisingly successful wartime dessert, Crumbed Prunes.( Read more... )

comments

I discovered hierarchical tags by observing other people's journals :-)

Spent the afternoon laboriously loading and editing, one by one, every single one of my eighty-plus journal entries categorised under the 'fiction' tag, in order to recategorise them under, say, fiction: blakes-7, producing a neat little list like this:( Read more... )

comments

I found twenty-two — plus this one. A waste of a very considerable amount of time, since character tags are really not that helpful on Dreamwidth.

(But then very few of the others are either, once they get used sufficiently often to make it difficult to find the specific entry I'm looking for...)

comments
