It's interesting to have Raoul who feels below Christine. But I really do wonder if isn't simply because she pined all those years after the Phantom and that Raoul felt that, you know, the bound Erik and Christine shared in music, well, he'll never be able to get to that. But I rather head-canon Raoul as the chivalrous kind of guy, who'll do anything to win Christine for good (and in morally appropriate ways... Raoul is not the mastermind Phantom!) Otherwise... the other hypothesis I have is that Raoul knew that Christine wasn't a virgin anymore... But clearly, it isn't that.

Well, I admit I don't really buy Christine pining hopelessly after Erik (especially after what she said in Once Upon Another time). But basically everyone in LND is OOC, so...

All that to say: the explanation you gave to Raoul becoming a drunkard makes a lot of sense. Though it isn't in my head-canon. Otherwise, he has no excuse for becoming a jerk.

I must say that your hypothesis about Raoul being more proud of his lineage than his name reminds me of Céleste and her feminine ancestors... ;) (Honestly, I think I'm going to write about them.)

I totally agree with you about saying that aristocrats cannot do whatever they want. The time where POTO happens is during the Third Republic, so yes, being a noble didn't mean much anymore. And even if Raoul lived during the Ancien Régime (pre-French Revolution), he couldn't have done whatever he wanted. The stereotype of the stupid queen and the noblemen doing whatever they wanted to while the poor little people in France are starving is unfortunately false... and I believe phans to be indirectly influenced by it.

Christine immediately jumping to the conclusion Raoul left with Gustave... it just screams bad-Raoul-hating-phanfic.

I couldn't help thinking of this dialogue between Christine, Raoul and Gustave when you mentionned the boy liking the Ankou story... I see Christine all hugging Gustave and saying to Raoul with tremolos (who wants to tell that story): "Noooo! Don't! I was scared sick of that story at his age!" And just having Raoul and Gustave having a bit of a sexist glance saying: "Women..." ;P
